The world may be a very cruel place at times.
Even though we are taught that genuine beauty is found within and that we should not judge others by their outward appearance, many people continue to endure constant bullying because of their appearance.
Journalist and author Melissa Blake is all too familiar with this reality. Even though her enlightening pieces on pop culture, relationships, and disabilities have inspired and moved people all over the world, she continues to receive nasty comments from individuals who don’t like the way she looks.
Melissa, who is 38 years old, has had to put up with being called a “potato with a face” and a “blob fish.”
Fortunately, she has discovered a potent technique to address her detractors.
Melissa Blake syndrome
Due to a genetic abnormality that impacts the flow of chemicals between cells during development, Melissa Blake was born with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. She has had about 25 surgeries in her lifetime and is reliant on a wheelchair to get around.
A distinctive facial look, such as a smaller, pursed mouth and decreased nasal cartilage, is a common feature of Freeman-Sheldon syndrome.
Unfortunately, nasty online harassment has resulted from Melissa’s distinctive traits. She shared her experiences with the nasty remarks she has encountered on Twitter on September 8. She was compared as a “blob fish” by one person and a “potato” by another.
Refusing to allow her tormentors bring her down
She should be banned, according to one commentator, since she is “too ugly.”
“People frequently inquire as to why I’ve struggled so much to embrace my appearance and the ideals of beauty set by society. I feel disregarded and undeserving because of remarks like this,” Melissa said.
“I’m constantly working to change this; it’s just another example of the ableism that people with disabilities face on a daily basis.”
Melissa made the decision to ignore the criticism and responded to those who suggested she should stop sharing pictures by posting even more.
In a recent round of trolling, several people said that because I’m too unattractive, I should not be allowed to share photos of myself. I therefore wish to use these three selfies to commemorate this occasion.
Her retort tweet undoubtedly had an effect. On Twitter, it has received 272,000 likes, and followers have praised Melissa’s courage and moral fortitude.
Furthermore, Melissa’s career is flourishing like never before; those who attempted to undermine her have failed miserably!
Bullying is unacceptable in today’s society, and it depresses me to consider the people who torment others while hiding behind computers in order to cover up their own shortcomings and fears.
