To be honest, I’m so over my boss’s romance with the intern. I’m so tired of getting pulled into his lies—covering meetings, making excuses, and acting as though I don’t know what’s happening—that I’m already deciding to quit this position.
His spouse frequently phones the office. I’ve had to pretend to be the “helpful employee” and avoid queries like it’s part of my job description since she is constantly suspicious and asks where he is. But I’d had enough that day.
I didn’t sugarcoat it when she called again, asking the same questions and following the same procedure. “Why don’t you come by and see him with the hot new intern?” I yelled.
I anticipated yelling. Anger. Tears.
Rather, she chuckled.
Like, really laughed—slowly, almost chuckling. “Oh, darling, I know,” she said after that. She works for me. I bought her to entice him.
I was so stunned that I just sat there with the phone. I was at a loss for words. My mind was attempting to adjust, as if I had unexpectedly entered a movie narrative.
Then her voice changed. She was silent for a moment, and then she whispered, “I would like you to take some discreet pictures of them together. They will be incredibly helpful during the divorce, I promise.
My stomach twisted.
Shocked by how nonchalantly she said it, like if this was all part of a long-running plan, I hung up the phone and just gazed at my screen. However, I was not going to do that. I’m not a private investigator, and gathering evidence for someone else’s marital dispute is not something I’m willing to risk for my career or my sanity.
Nevertheless, I did learn one thing from that day: you believe you understand the situation until someone exposes that there is a completely different game being played behind the scenes.
