These are the twins’ post-separation appearances. The twins were born connected at the chest and shared essential organs.
These conjoined twins shared several essential organs and were fused from the chest to the pelvis at birth. Although separation first appeared unfeasible, a few of experts chose to take a chance.
They shared one leg in the middle and had two of their own legs between them. Each sister only had one leg remaining after the procedure.
The girls are ten years old today. Each of them uses a wheelchair and a prosthetic limb to go about. Are you curious about their current appearance?
In August 2014, Erika and Eva Sandoval were born in California. From the chest to the pelvis, they were linked like conjoined twins. They had a single liver, a single digestive system, a single bladder, and even a single uterus below the chest.
They shared one leg and each had two of their own legs. They could only travel and live together, despite the fact that each girl had her own heart, lungs, and spine.
From the beginning, the doctors were aware that the girls would not be able to lead normal lives without surgery. However, the separation was very dangerous because even the smallest error could have killed them both.
Doctors kept an eye on the sisters for years until their bodies were robust enough. The medical team didn’t decide to proceed with the surgery until December 2016, when Erika and Eva turned two.
For around eighteen hours, Stanford Children’s Hospital surgeons carried out a novel procedure.
Each child’s internal organs, blood arteries, and tissues were gradually separated by a team of over fifty doctors, resulting in a complete and functional body. The girls had to relearn how to sit, move, and play during a protracted rehabilitation period following the procedure.
Erika and Eva lead happy, fulfilling lives now. They love to spend time with other kids, go to school, and sketch. They each use a wheelchair and a prosthetic leg, yet they are nonetheless quite happy and active.
According to their parents, the sisters have remained bonded despite all the difficulties; they can sense each other even when they are separated by great distances and never leave each other because they have been bound together since birth not just by blood but also by the power of love and the determination to live.
