Surrey native Taryn Charles entered the Britain’s Got Talent stage with an air of humility, declaring that her voice was “all right” and that her only goal was to “make people smile.” Her history, however, showed a deeper purpose: Taryn uses music as a tool when working with special needs children, and her pupil was there to support her. The judges were quickly won over by her real modesty and kindness, even though it was obvious that they were not prepared for the powerful performance she was going to give.
After taking a deep breath, Taryn began to perform a cover of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” a timeless classic by Aretha Franklin. The change was amazing and happened right away. The panel was instantly enthralled by her deep, soulful voice, which had a remarkable tonal richness and a natural raspiness. With her powerful and genuine performance, she dominated the enormous platform and received a standing ovation from the whole audience.
One of the series’ most poignant moments resulted from the judges’ outstanding feedback. Bruno Tonioli, who had the privilege of meeting Carole King, the song’s co-writer, described Taryn as a “very, very, very special person” and commended the distinctive “color” of her voice. Visibly moved, Simon Cowell acknowledged that Taryn had “sold us a complete dummy,” thinking she was merely a fearful competitor when, in reality, she was a star. When he announced that Taryn had just proven everyone who had ever doubted her incorrect, he destroyed the Golden Buzzer and sent her straight to the live performances.
