Michael Collings, a 19-year-old Plymouth IT engineer, gave a sweetly modest introduction, stating that he lived with his parents on a caravan park (a “posh” one, he explained) and that the only singing competition he had ever participated in was at his neighborhood bar. Michael was engaged to Sarah, whom he embarrassingly proposed to at a Chinese buffet, and they were expecting a child, so the stakes were high. His appearance was a little messy,The judges’ expectations were lowered and the stage was set for a stunning surprise when he appeared to be getting ready to board a “long haul flight.”
Michael started performing Tracy Chapman’s soulful hymn, “Fast Car,” using just an acoustic guitar and a microphone. The entire ambiance of the theater changed as soon as he began. The audience was immediately moved by the voice that arose; it was deep, husky, and full of unadulterated, mature emotion. In addition to singing the music, he made the timeless song uniquely his own by delivering a heartfelt, bare-spoken story. The audience gave the performance a huge standing ovation since it was an instantaneous, real moment of musical truth.
The judges were ecstatic, utterly caught off guard by their presumptions. His passionate address was applauded by Amanda Holden, who was clearly moved and said it was the “best reaction we’ve got all day.” Michael had a “really interesting quality to your voice,” and he “instantly connected with the audience,” according to one judge, who acknowledged that he hadn’t had high expectations. Michael Collings successfully advanced with a unanimous three “yeses,” prepared to give up his existence on a caravan site for the global stage, demonstrating that talent can come from the most unlikely places.
