When the driver looked more attentively, he saw what the wolves were actually protecting: a group of wolves stood still on the tracks, attempting to halt the train
It was a cold, calm winter day. Everything appeared to be as usual as the driver took his customary route. But then he noticed something strange: a group of wolves was standing directly on the tracks.
In contrast to what predators typically do when they spot a train, they did not flee or hide in the forest. Conversely, the wolves appeared to purposefully obstruct the path. One by one, they howled, so long and loud that the driver was startled, their amber eyes glowing in the headlights.
His first instinct was to use the brakes. One of the wolves narrowly escaped the wheels as the wheels squealed and the train rolled a few more meters due to inertia. The creatures did not retreat, however, even at that point. They blocked the steel machine’s progress by standing on the tracks.
The driver initially believed that the wolves were either insane or just hungry and ready to attack. Then he narrowed his eyes, attempting to figure out why the wolves were actually on the rails.
Then he saw it: something odd and out of the ordinary was there, amid the pristine snow.
A man dressed in white was lying on the tracks, seemingly asleep and immobile.
The driver hurried off. His face was struck by the cold air. Instead of touching him, the wolves moved aside to let him go close to the man who was lying there.
The animals appeared to comprehend that they had stopped the train for this man since he was significant to them.
The driver leaned down and checked for a pulse. Though scarcely breathing, the man was nonetheless alive. He checked his respiration and rubbed his hands in an attempt to revive him. The wounded guy struggled to open his eyes and said a few words in a whisper, his lips quivering from the cold:
They saved me.
As it happened, there had been an attempt on his life. In the hopes that the following train would kill him, a number of people had thrashed him and flung him straight onto the rails.
However, as though sensing the threat, the wolves had formed a pack and positioned themselves in the way, shielding him all the way to the end.
The driver radioed for assistance. He used his own jacket and an old blanket he found in the cottage to cover the injured man until help arrived. The wolves remained close by, closely observing all movements.
The pack gradually withdrew into the forest as the rescuers arrived to remove the man. They had accomplished their goal.
