Families react — then step in
At first, Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron, were furious. Ron, a retired truck driver, said he confronted his son and told him he’d been foolish. Still, he also made it clear they weren’t going to abandon the baby.
“We can’t undo what has happened and will now accept Jamie into our family. There’s no way we’ll turn our backs on him,” Ron told The Sun at the time.
After the initial shock, both sets of grandparents prepared to support the young couple.
April’s mother, Maria, who was 36 then, said the news was overwhelming at first, but the family allowed April to decide whether to continue the pregnancy.
Jamie’s difficult start
Jamie was born in November 2010 by cesarean section and weighed 8lbs 14oz. His early days were difficult because he was born with a malformed oesophagus, which made feeding extremely challenging.
Doctors performed surgery, and after 11 days in the hospital, he was declared healthy and allowed to go home.
By the time the tabloids picked up the story, Jamie was already four weeks old. He was living with April at her parents’ home.
To help manage the situation, April shared a room with her newborn and her 17-year-old sister, Robyn, who helped feed Jamie with a bottle. Nathan lived a few miles away with his own parents.
Uncertainty about their relationship
Despite everything, April said she was determined to be a good mother.
“Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mum for him. He’s perfect and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants,” she said.
Back then, it wasn’t clear how the young parents would handle raising a child. Nathan said he hoped Jamie could stay with him on weekends, while April would care for him during the week.
However, there was confusion early on about whether April and Nathan would even remain together. April admitted they were in a “cooling off period” and wasn’t sure their relationship would last.
Where they are now
Four years later, April confirmed that she and Nathan were no longer a couple.
“I broke up with Nathan about three years ago; we’re not really in contact,” she said in 2014. “I don’t really want to be in contact with him. When I first had Jamie, I hoped we might stay together. There are no regrets, though.”
April had originally planned to continue school, but she never completed her GCSEs. In 2014, she said she wasn’t working or studying and was focused on raising Jamie — and that things were going well.
She also credited her family’s support, saying her mother and sister loved having Jamie in the home. She mentioned that Jamie went to school in the mornings, giving her some free time, and that she might return to education later. At the time, she also said she wasn’t planning to have another baby anytime soon.
Looking at April’s social media today, it’s clear her life has changed dramatically since those early years. Now 28 and known as April Lianna, she is a mother of three children — Jamie Rhys, Rowan David, and Ava Lianne — and is in a happy relationship with her partner, Jake Jones.
Nathan also appears to be doing well. Reports suggest that in February 2023, he became engaged to his partner, Samantha, and has since built a new family with several children.
A reminder of how life can change
Teen pregnancy often comes with intense pressure, public judgment, and life-changing responsibility — especially at such a young age.
But in this case, despite the difficult beginning and the spotlight placed on them, April and Nathan seem to have moved forward and built stable lives. Their story is a reminder that even when life starts in chaos, with enough support and determination, it’s still possible to overcome the hardest circumstances and find happiness.
