Willow Smith, the daughter of famous Hollywood figures Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, was accustomed to the limelight. However, the nine-year-old emerged from her family’s shadow and established herself as a star in her own right in 2010 with the release of her debut single, “Whip My Hair.”

With its powerful lyrics, hair-whipping hook, and strong hymn of self-expression, the song swiftly gained widespread popularity among listeners of all ages.

Willow, the youngest of Smith’s three children, was also thrust into the public eye by it, and she embarked on a global tour with Justin Bieber.

But it was too much attention for a little girl.

“It was really, really black at one point. In an interview with Allure in May 2024, she said, “I was trying to run away from it in every single way that I could.”

In response, she shaved her head.

“Your hair will always be on you, carrying the energy you have throughout your entire life, including all of your joys, sorrows, and confusion. You become somewhat nude when you shave it off. You seem to be saying that you should start over.

Willow, who previously acknowledged that she “really regretted” calling her debut single a “embarrassment,” subsequently told Billboard News that, as an adult, she is thankful for the experience she had following the release of “Whip My Hair.”

It had a lot of enjoyable aspects. I was like, “Oh, no, trauma…there were things that hurt me and things I don’t understand!” when I was a teenager. My message hasn’t really changed overall, even if there were certainly things that upset you and things you don’t understand.

The 24-year-old Grammy nominee continued, “[The song] is like, ‘be yourself, live out loud, don’t care what anybody thinks, express yourself!'” It hasn’t really altered. “Whip My Hair,” in my opinion, is only the basis for everything that has transpired thereafter.I had a great time. I am incredibly appreciative and would never take it back.

Artist breaking genres

Willow swiftly separated herself from popular expectations, even if her first single demonstrated her abilities as a pop musician. She carved out her own niche in alternative and experimental music rather than riding the wave of pop popularity.

“I’ve attempted to flee from it. I’ve made an effort to say, “No! “I’m going to do something else because I’m not a musician,” and then, guess what? The co-author of “Black Shield Maiden,” a historical tale about an African fighter in a Viking world, exclaimed, “It just keeps coming back!” You can tell if something is truly significant to you in this way. if you still want to do it even though it hurts and discomforts you? I have faith in that inner motivation. You think, “I have to persevere through this discomfort.”

The model’s sixth studio album, “Empathogen,” which combines Gregorian chant, jazz, and Indian raga, was published in May 2024.

proving others incorrect

Willow, who starred with her father in the 2007 film I Am Legend, struggled to define herself on her own in the public light while coming from a wealthy family.

She also disputes being a nepo-baby, a term used to describe celebrities who owe their success to their well-known parents. Some, like Willow, have resisted the notion that their prosperity is undeserved, while others wear the title as a badge of privilege.

She told Allure, “I genuinely think that my spirit is a strong spirit and that I would still be a weirdo and a crazy thinker even if my parents weren’t who they were.” People do believe that my parents are the only reason I’m successful, thus I really believe that a small amount of insecurity has motivated me. That has motivated me to put in a lot of effort to disprove them. However, I don’t have to prove anything to anyone these days.

Willow Smith is much more than just Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s daughter. She has established herself as a powerful influence in the entertainment world through her advocacy, acting, and music.
