A 25-year-old Georgia singer named Hunter Price began his audition for America’s Got Talent (AGT) by singing Bryan Adams’s timeless song “Everything I Do.” But judge Simon Cowell cut the track short because the performance was so unimpressive. Cowell was quite direct in telling Hunter that his performance sounded like a “million times” cover of the song from karaoke contests and was incredibly generic. This unexpected turn of events prompted Hunter to ask if he might play an original song instead, giving him a second opportunity in the middle of the audition.
Instantly, the vibe changed when Hunter shared that he has started composing his own songs, influenced by Taylor Swift and others. His original song, “Left Behind,” was immediately launched into. The difference between his initial try and this performance was striking. A previously concealed depth and genuineness were exposed by the song’s beautiful melody and poignant lyrics, which dealt with a terrible history. A moving aspect of Hunter’s story was when he revealed that he had lived alone since the age of 18 and that there were times when he “hadn’t had enough money to eat,” which gave his songs a deeper emotional resonance.
It was admitted by the judges that they had witnessed “two separate auditions.” The first to offer him a “yes” was Sofía Vergara, who previously confessed that she would have told him “no” after the first song. Hunter was encouraged to “open up” and be more authentic by Howie Mandel, who remained somewhat suspicious. But Simon Cowell saw the potential, and he came to the conclusion that Hunter had more songwriting talent than he gave himself credit for, and that his main problem was that he tried too hard to satisfy everyone. In the end, Hunter received three “yeses” for his original song, which gave him a much-needed second opportunity to establish himself as a genuine artist, thanks to the raw, honest skill it showcased.
