They knew I could never have a child, and yet Julien’s family insisted on this union. But what I discovered under the blanket on our wedding night changed my life forever

Julien’s family pressed on this union even though they knew I would never be able to conceive. However, my life was irrevocably altered by what I found beneath the blanket on the night of our wedding.

I’m Élodie Laurent, and I’m thirty years old.

I believed for a long time that my life would develop in the peaceful seclusion of my books and plants.

Three years prior, when a surgeon at Pitié-Salpêtrière said the words that put me out of my life, everything had changed: I would never have children.

Thomas, my then-partner, sank into quiet and abruptly left me at daybreak with the words, “We’re done.”

I put marriage on hold that day, like a book that can never be opened again.

Julien came into my life in a different way.

He was 37 years old, the new regional director of our architectural firm, and he radiated that calm assurance that is really comforting. He broke the distance without my noticing, even though I thought he was out of reach.

On chilly nights, a hot chocolate was left on my desk.

A gentle reminder on rainy days.

Then I heard a line that made my heart stop:

I want to tell you about my life, Elodie. Really?

I opened out to him about my infertility, my anxieties, and that sense of being undervalued. He merely muttered, “I love you as you are,” while holding my hand.

I was greeted with no hesitation at all by his mother, Mrs. Moreau. Everything came together almost effortlessly when she was around.

I wore an ivory dress that seemed to glow with its own light on the wedding day, amid the opulent halls of the city hall in the second arrondissement.
As though he had been waiting for me his entire life, Julien took my hand.

I was taking the pins out of my hair slowly that night at our Vieux Lyon apartment when he entered. Despite their tenderness, his eyes possessed a seriousness that I had never seen in my life.

With his warm hands resting on my shoulders, he stood behind me:
— Are you exhausted, my dear?

After that, he guided me to the bed.

He raised the blanket.

I felt my entire body freeze there. My life was irrevocably altered by what I found beneath that blanket.

I didn’t anticipate anything out of the ordinary when I removed the blanket that was folded at the foot of the bed. However, beneath it was a little cradle that seemed to have materialized out of nowhere. And there was a baby, wrapped in a white blanket, sleeping soundly in the cradle.

Julien moved visibly and took a step closer. He muttered, his voice quivering:

He is our son. It was born for us, not for you. For you, I secretly adopted him. Tonight, I wanted you to become a mother. You truly deserve that.

I was still. My breath caught and my eyes became blurry.

I felt my heart rekindle as if someone had given it fresh life when the baby stirred and opened his eyes a little.

With his hand shaking but certain, Julien knelt next to the cradle:

“I didn’t want you to feel empty when you started your new life. A youngster already has all they need to feel safe and loved in you.

Our honey-colored flat has been filled with the sound of Lucas’ laughing ever since that day.

Even if I am not his biological mother, I am his mother, and that is the most important thing.

Because love isn’t always inherited. but in two hearts that decide to start a family together.
