The maid’s action startled the millionaire, who knew that his daughter had only three months to live.
A sad diagnosis of a rare, severe illness for which there appeared to be no effective treatment had been made for Rodrigo Alarcón’s only daughter. Rodrigo, who was used to using money to solve problems, called in the top experts from all around Europe. However, they all agreed that there was nothing more that could be done.
Little Camila had a hard time falling asleep in her bed that night. Her father sank into a recliner next to her, attempting to hold back his tears.
Do you want me to prepare you some tea, sir? The young maid, Claudia, timidly requested.
Rodrigo looked up at her with bloodshot eyes.
“My daughter won’t be saved by a cup of tea,” he said in a weak whisper.
Claudia was awake when the house eventually quieted down. She rocked Camila gently while humming a lullaby that her own mother used to sing. A recollection reappeared: an elderly, obscure physician had saved her brother, who was also condemned.
She plucked up the courage the following day when she saw Rodrigo surrounded by attorneys drafting his will.
“Sir… My brother was saved by a doctor I know. Although he doesn’t guarantee miracles, he might attempt.
Rodrigo jerked to his feet.
“You have no right to call me a charlatan. Get out!
With tears in her eyes but a strong resolve to persevere, Claudia left the room. Rodrigo remembered Camila’s resolute stare two days later, when she was hardly breathing. He swallowed his pride for the first time.
“This physician… Does he still exist? Where can we locate him?
They went to a little mountain village together in secret. An old man stood at the door of a small house there.
“You’re seeking miracles,” he remarked icily. “The truth is all that exists here.”
“We want a chance, not miracles,” Claudia begged.
Following a calm examination, the doctor stated, “Her illness is severe, but not impossible to overcome.”
Are you able to save her? Tell me what you want, and I will pay for it.
The doctor cut in right away, saying, “Here, money is meaningless. What counts is if you’re prepared to try something new.
“Before we start,” the elderly man added solemnly, “what we are going to do will try your patience, your faith, and your secrets. Some of those secrets have the potential to ruin everything.
Holding little Camila, whose heart beat weakly, Rodrigo and Claudia exchanged a somber glance. A decision that would alter their lives forever would determine the child’s destiny.
“What secrets?” With a quivering voice, Rodrigo inquired.
The doctor answered, “The ones you’ve never dared face.” “Your daughter requires more than just medical attention. She must experience your absolute affection.
Knowing the truth in those words, which Rodrigo had long refused to acknowledge, Claudia lowered her gaze.
The therapy started right away. The doctor substituted natural medicines, healthy food, and a peaceful setting for harsh pharmaceuticals. With gentle dedication, Claudia adhered to all instructions: exact infusions, nightly lullabies, warmth, and attention. Rodrigo battled his sense of guilt.
He went to the crib one restless night, grasped his daughter’s hand, and muttered.
“Pardon me, my kid. I thought money could purchase anything. I see now that you are the only one who matters.
Camila’s eyes opened, and she looked at him tenderly. Her condition gradually improved: she smiled, her breathing got stronger, and she had a glimpse of hope. Rodrigo discovered how to be present and love. Ignoring the outer world, he switched off his phone.
“If it’s necessary, let everything else fall apart,” he remarked. “I’ll keep my daughter safe.”
The trial, however, was far from over. Camila experienced a surge in fever one night. As the doctor worked, Rodrigo let out a desperation-filled cry. With tears in her eyes, Claudia muttered,
“Fight, fight, fight, my love.”
The young girl opened her eyes at daybreak.
“Daddy… cake,” she whispered.
Overwhelmed by emotion, Rodrigo held her.
Calmly, the doctor answered, “She will live.” “But keep in mind that love, not science, saved her.”
A few weeks later, Camila celebrated her birthday in a house that was suddenly brimming with laughter.
“Will I live, Claudia?” she smiled.
With hazy eyes, Claudia answered,
Yes, sweetheart. True love will be all around you.
At last, Rodrigo saw the true source of prosperity.
