I noticed some noise coming from the parking lot as I was packing my bags and heading out of the supermarket. People had gathered in a circle, some standing there with their mouths open, others using their phones to record. I moved in to observe what was going on.
A man was attempting to park in a spot that was open. However, a white SUV abruptly rushed into the same position before his wheels could cross the line. A man in a baseball cap and a woman with sunglasses leaped out. They preferred that one, as if on principle, even though there were several other empty spaces around.
The man answered calmly, “But I was already turning in here.”
The woman yelled, “First come, first served!” before adding, grinning bitterly, “This is our country!” Thank God you live here at all!
When I heard that, I was surprised. He looked like he was going to blow up—that type of humiliation is unforgivable.
😵😲 The man, however, restrained himself. He decided to take a different route rather than yelling. For weeks, the couple was so traumatized by the lesson he gave them that they dared not leave their home; shame was their penalty.
He just pulled out his phone and recorded everything in silence. The footage was on the internet a few hours later. The video went viral on social media more quickly than a wildfire on parched grass, and the city all almost burst.
A public apology was demanded in thousands of comments. Everyone, including coworkers and neighbors, knew their names now.
They were not permitted to report to work the following day. A statement about “zero tolerance for discrimination” was issued by the company where she worked as a manager. Neighbors rejected them, and friends unfollowed them.
And that man simply continued to live his life. Without yelling, without retaliation. He continued to greet the cashier, park at the same store, and assist senior citizens with carrying their groceries to the car.
