When I decided to stop by my brother’s house after driving by, I noticed my wife’s car at the entry. I cautiously made my way to the window to see what they were doing there and was appalled
After a demanding workday, I was on my way home when I spotted a house I knew well—my brother’s. Since it was on my way and we hadn’t seen each other in a while, I reasoned that we should stop by, catch up, and have coffee like we used to.
However, I saw a car parked in front of his house as soon as I got to his gate. My heart stopped beating. My wife owned the vehicle.
I just stood there, gaping, unable to believe what I was seeing, without even looking at the license plate.
I initially attempted to persuade myself that it was merely a coincidence, thinking that perhaps she had other business or had stopped by to drop off something. However, my heart beat more quickly the longer I stood there.
I made the decision to give her a call.
– “Hey, how are you?”
— “Hello,” she replied coolly, “I’m at a friend’s, and after we spend some time together, I’ll go home.” I will return in an hour, so don’t worry.
“At a friend’s place?” I repeated the question while attempting to speak steadily.
– “Yes, everything is good.” — The call then ended.
I was unsure of my thoughts when I stood in front of my brother’s house. Why would she pretend to be at a friend’s if she had only come for something innocent? I had a hunch that this is not a coincidence. I had to learn the truth.
In an effort to be silent, I stepped closer. The window was filled with warm light. I was astonished by what I saw when I looked inside.
My wife was sitting on the couch with red eyes and tears streaming down her cheeks. My brother was beside her, holding her hand discreetly and offering consoling words.
She sobbed as she stated, “I can’t keep this from him any longer.” It’s incorrect. It’s not his kid. He might learn at any time.
Leaning closer, my brother remarked in a stern yet hushed voice:
— “You have to keep quiet. If not, you will permanently ruin our relationship, his life, and your marriage.
My heart was racing so hard that I was having problems breathing, and I felt lightheaded. I can’t even recall how I went to knock on the window.
They both leaped. My brother froze, as though he had seen a ghost, and my wife became pale.
Three people bound by a falsehood that none of us wanted to discuss, we gazed at one another.
I’m at a loss on how to continue living and how to forgive them.
