Our daughter’s tiny kitchen was destroyed by my mother-in-law. I made the decision to discipline her, and this is what I did.
Even though she is just five years old, my daughter Alice enjoys hanging out with me in the kitchen. She constantly comes to monitor every step of the cooking process. We made the decision to provide her her own small kitchen so she could pursue her interest and make her own small recipes, such as the fruit salads she adores.
She was ecstatic when she found her new kitchen. She would combine and joyfully serve the fruit I chopped up each morning. In her own tiny kitchen, she felt like a true chef.
One individual, though, disapproved of this concept: my mother-in-law. She thought Alice would wind up overeating if she had unrestricted access to snacks.
I informed her that our objective was to teach Alice how to eat in a balanced manner and that we were handling the matter. However, my mother-in-law continued to criticize our strategy in spite of my justifications.
She was expected to monitor Alice for a couple of hours one evening. I heard sobbing coming from the kitchen when I got home. I hurried to observe the situation.
I was horrified to see how badly ruined Alice’s kitchen was. Her tiny kitchen was in ruins, and her small utensils were all over the place. Alice was sobbing while kneeling in the rubble.
I was so angry that my husband went to see his mother and demanded an explanation. She acknowledged that, “for her own good,” she had wrecked Alice’s kitchen. I therefore made the decision to discipline her, and this is what I did.
We made the decision to demonstrate to Alice that her actions have repercussions when my mother-in-law damaged her kitchen.
A thorough bill for everything she had destroyed was sent to her.
We made it plain that her behavior was inappropriate, even though she attempted to minimize it on multiple calls.
She departed the house, clearly taken aback by our response.
For our part, we assured Alice that we would purchase a new kitchen for her, but this time it would be secure and impervious to damage.
Despite the agony, this experience taught us to be firm in our parenting choices and to respect Alice’s feelings.
Nobody will be able to challenge our decisions any longer.
We are closer together as a family than ever before.
