The purest expression of gratitude is given to a veterinarian who breaks a wild stallion’s rusty chains.
Seeing a creature created for freedom turned to pain is one of the most heartbreaking things that can happen.
Wild horses should be able to run forever across broad plains since they are emblems of strength and untamed spirit. However, some people in Romania’s rural areas are bound by rusty, hefty chains that eat away at their flesh and rob them of the life they were supposed to have.
Dr. Ovidiu Rosu, a kind veterinarian who was well-known throughout the Danube Delta, found himself in the middle of this savagery. He saw a magnificent stallion standing by itself in the middle of a marsh on a chilly, clear morning. The animal, which had once been strong and proud, now shuddered beneath the weight of chains that were inserted into its legs. His eyes, which ought to have been filled with pride, were filled with fear and pain.
Ovidiu was unable to turn away. With bandages, pliers, and bolt cutters in hand, he moved cautiously closer while murmuring:
— Simple, huge man. I’m available to assist you.
He gained the trust of the horse piece by piece. Finally, too exhausted to fight, the stallion lay down in the grass, displaying a shaky sliver of trust.
Then a laborious task started. Every cutter movement felt like a struggle, and every link was fused with rust. Just a little longer… freedom is so close, Ovidiu said, stroking the horse’s neck in between exertions.
The minutes passed slowly until finally the metal buckled. The chains snapped one last time and landed heavily on the floor.
There was a long pause. The animal remained still, almost unable to accept that this terrible weight was indeed gone. Then he got up slowly. The stallion was able to stand straight and majestic once more as his paralyzed muscles recovered their vigor.
Ovidiu was stunned by what transpired next; it was a moment of great intensity, as though the horse had just given him the most heartfelt and pure gratitude a human could ever receive.
He stood still for a while, his eyes darting as though he was questioning the unexpected lightness around his legs. He tested this newfound freedom by rubbing the tip of his muzzle against a chain that was on the ground. Then, with a burst of vigor, he stood up, apprehensive at first, then confident.
What transpired was quite poignant. In a rare show of trust, the stallion raised his head and pressed his muzzle lightly against Ovidiu’s shoulder. A quiet, sincere, and heartfelt thank you. Overwhelmed, the veterinarian remained motionless, tears welling up in his eyes at the delicate yet unshakable relationship between man and animal.
The stallion jumped away a few moments later. Revived, free, complete again, he disappeared into the foggy horizon, his mane whipping in the wind.
