A young child contacted the police late at night to report that her parents wouldn’t wake up, and when the authorities got there, they discovered something terrible.
Sitting at the station, the duty officer gazed at the screen of an antiquated monitor. Ten minutes to three in the morning, the quietest hour of the night, was displayed on the wall clock. All night, not a single emergency call had been received. The phone abruptly rang as the officer was already dozing off.
Out of habit, he picked up the receiver and said, “Police station, this is officer speaking.”
A faint, shaky child’s voice could be heard on the other end:
Hi there…
The cop scowled. The voice was that of a young girl, perhaps seven years old.
Hi, my love. What’s up with your late call? Your folks are where?
With hesitation, she answered, “They… they are in the room.”
Alright, hand your parents the phone.
A pause occurred.
No. “I can’t,” the girl said, her voice growing softer.
The man’s hands trembled.
Okay, then explain what transpired. You are aware that you only contact the police when anything serious occurs.
“It’s crucial,” the girl whimpered. Both parents are present in the room, but they are not moving.
The officer’s drowsiness disappeared right away.
Perhaps they’re simply dozing off? It’s late at night.
No. I attempted to rouse them. When I walk into the room, Mom usually wakes up, but not today.
Immediately, the officer realized something was off. This is serious, his instinct informed him.
Does the house contain any other adults? Grandma or Grandpa, perhaps?
No, just Dad and Mom.
“All right, tell me your address,” he answered hastily, gesturing to his companion to prepare the vehicle.
The street and home number were dictated by the girl. The cop said forcefully before hanging up:
I want you to pay close attention. You should wait for us in your room. Don’t leave, will you?
“All right,” was the silent response.
The patrol cruiser pulled up in front of a modest two-story house on the city’s outskirts ten minutes later. The young girl herself opened the door.
She gestured to the bedroom door and said, “They’re there.”
After exchanging looks, the cops went into the room, but everyone was horrified by what they discovered
There was silence in the bedroom. A man and a lady were on the bed. Both were immobile and had deathly pale faces.
One of the officers sighed, “My God.”
They dispatched an investigating team and an ambulance right away. There were no indications of violence or evidence of a struggle, the specialists concluded immediately. However, everything became evident when they checked the air. The house was experiencing a gas leak. In their sleep, the parents had suffocated.
Because her room was on the second level, where the heavy gas climbed more slowly, the young girl miraculously survived. She was also spared by her nightly routine of opening the door and letting some fresh air into the room.
The girl was transported to the hospital right away after the physicians determined that she had also ingested harmful vapors, and her condition was eventually stabilized.
The girl might have suffered the same fate as her parents if the duty officer hadn’t believed her, if he had assumed it was a ridiculous prank or infantile fantasy.
