Without notifying my husband, I went to our country home to see what he was secretly doing there: I opened the door and was appalled.
In the hamlet, my spouse and I own a country home. On the weekends, we frequently traveled there to grow flowers, get veggies from the garden, or simply unwind away from the bustle of the city.
However, he has been coming up with excuses not to go lately. He had work one day, was exhausted the next, or had other tasks to run. Everyone experiences difficult times, so I didn’t give it much thought.
One day, as I was on the phone with my neighbor, she abruptly said:
— Yesterday, I went to the country house to see your spouse.
I was surprised.
That isn’t possible! He was working a shift.
“No, no,” she said, “I actually saw him.”
After I hung up, my mind started racing with the worst scenarios. Would he be able to have a mistress? Is he meeting her at the country house in secret?
My spouse reiterated his decision not to go the following weekend.
I said, “Perhaps I should go alone then?”
“No!” he snapped back. I’m concerned because I don’t want you to go alone.
My concerns were only heightened by his perseverance. I made the decision to follow him when he left the house. And he drove to the country house, as I had guessed.
After a short delay, I left as well. With a beating heart, I walked toward the home. I unlocked the door. In fear, they froze. If there had been a mistress present, it would have been preferable to what I observed.
I walked cautiously inside and listened. Quiet. However, a peculiar, sweet-metallic, and heavy odor emerged from the shed. With my heart ready to burst from my chest, I entered.
Animal hides dangled from the wooden rafters inside. Even while that was awful enough, my gaze instantly focused on something that made me freeze with terror: something that resembled human skin too much hung amid them.
What I was seeing was unbelievable.
Just then, my spouse stepped through the door. When he realized I had seen everything, his face went white.
“This is hunting,” he mumbled as he moved in my direction. – I just got begun. I simply didn’t want to frighten you.
I stood there staring at him. I had a strong gut feeling that he was lying. However, I acted as though I believed him. I gritted my teeth and said:
Alright. I get it. I simply didn’t anticipate it.
He relaxed and dropped his shoulders. We went back to the home in silence, but I could feel his eyes on my back, as though he was attempting to determine whether or not I really believed him.
I didn’t get any sleep at all that night. With shaking hands, I contacted the police the following morning as soon as he departed for his errands. I was aware that checking was preferable to learning later that my greatest fears were accurate.
