Every day, a young bride changed her sheets. Until her mother-in-law came into her room one day and made a startling discovery—revealing a truth that might shatter any mother’s heart.
Elena had only been married to my son, Lucas, for a few days. Despite being straightforward, their wedding in Batangas was full of emotions, laughter, and sincere vows.
Elena appeared to be the ideal daughter-in-law: kind, considerate, cheerful all the time, and incredibly attentive to all family members.
She even enchanted our family and neighbors.
At the market, I proudly told my friends, “We are very fortunate to have such a beautiful daughter-in-law.”
However, a few days following the wedding, I started to notice something odd.
The Sheets’ Mysteries
Elena would hang the blankets and sheets outside to dry in the sun each morning. She occasionally changed them twice a day.
“Tell me, dear, why do you change the sheets every day?” I asked her one day.
With a soft grin, she answered, “Mom, I’m sensitive to dust. When everything is clean and fresh, I sleep better.
But something didn’t feel right. Every sheet was brand-new, thoughtfully selected for the event, and subtly scented. Our family did not have any allergy sufferers.
Slowly, a suspicion started to develop: something else must be going on.
A Startling Finding
As I was preparing to leave for the market one morning, I happened to walk past her room and smelled something odd.
My heart pounded as I opened the door. I walked up to the bed and carefully raised the sheets.
My legs nearly buckled.
There were frightening, thick, dark stains all across the sheet.
I opened the drawers in panic and discovered well concealed packs of bandages, a bottle of disinfectant, and cleanly folded clothing.
Elena’s Verdict
I rushed downstairs and took Elena by the wrist, saying, “Tell me! What’s happening? Why all of this? Why keep it from me?
Her eyes were wet, her body shook, and she was initially mute. Then, sobbing violently, she fell into my arms.
— “Mom… Lucas’s leukemia has progressed. He only has a few months remaining, according to the physicians. I was unable to leave him alone, so we hurried through the wedding. Even though our time together is so brief, I wanted to stay.
My entire world fell apart.
To keep me safe, my son, the boy I had loved and reared, had kept this a secret.
In order to keep me from crying, Elena had decided to endure her suffering in silence.
A Mother’s Commitment
I didn’t get any sleep at all that night. As I lay there, I considered Elena’s silent devotion to Lucas and his suffering.
I helped Elena wash the old sheets the following day and went to buy new ones. I got up early every morning to be with them, to help them, to be by their side.
I embraced her in my arms as we changed the bedding one morning and said, “Thank you, Elena. You show my son so much love.” for remaining. even though you knew you would lose him, for your decision.
Lucas died quietly in his sleep three months later. Until his final breath, Elena held his hand and whispered, “I love you.”
No suffering, no effort. Just tranquility. And a soft grin on his lips.
Elena never left after that day.
She didn’t return to her parents.
She never got married again.
She stayed with me, helping to manage our little grocery store in a modest way.
She started to resemble my own daughter.
Two years later, when individuals inquire:
— “What keeps Elena living with you?”
I respond with a smile:
Because she became not just the wife of my son but also my daughter. And she will always own this house.
