Accepting self-reliance
Lisa had already been living on her own for more than a decade at the age of 29. She settled into her apartment, worked full-time, and was admired by her coworkers for her commitment and generosity.
Her mom remembers:
With the exception of operating the cash register, Lisa was capable of doing everything in the store. Her coworkers were glad to have her around because she liked her job.
Lisa met a man who also had trisomy 21 in this environment. They had a respectful and solid relationship and were both eager to keep their freedom. In order for her daughter to make well-informed decisions, her mother, Patti, had always made sure to bring up important subjects with her, such as contraception and maintaining balance in a relationship.
Nick’s birth
Patti was taken aback when Lisa became a mother, but she decided right away that she would help her daughter along the way. The situation was remarkable because fatherhood is uncommon for men with Down syndrome. However, the most important thing was that the child was raised in a loving environment.
Lisa continued her job and day-to-day activities while devoting herself to Nick with love and tenacity. Constantly present, Patti and her daughter became a true educational partnership.
Challenges and verdicts
Lisa, like all women, had to deal with work, kids, and unanticipated circumstances on a daily basis. However, she also had to deal with unrelenting hostility and critical stares.
Her decision to become a mother was criticized by others, and even close friends turned away out of concern that her example would encourage other women with trisomy 21 to think about becoming mothers.

Today, Nick is a happy adult.
After over thirty years, Nick is now a contented and self-assured young man. He was raised by two strong women in a secure household that was full of encouragement, values, and humor.
