People were appalled when they realized why the officer’s devoted dog had suddenly leaped onto the casket and started barking and whimpering loudly throughout the burial.
A cherished commander, father, and man who sacrificed his life for his country was being buried. Everyone was present at the cemetery that day, including friends, family, fellow soldiers, and brothers-in-arms. With his death, everyone believed that a whole period had come to an end and that everyone who knew him had lost a piece of their hearts.
Bright flowers adorned the casket, yet they appeared colorless at the time. Grief hung in the air, and nobody tried to contain their tears. Women and men wept, unable to comprehend the full impact of what had transpired. A heavy quiet loomed over everything.
But all of a sudden, a long, melancholy bark broke the silence. People whirled around. A German shepherd, the officer’s devoted companion, slowly appeared from the throng. He walked heavy and slowly. The dog paused at the coffin, took a quick glance, and then, with all of his remaining energy, leaped onto the lid.
His eyes were filled with sorrow and despair as he cried and scratched the wood with his paws. He appeared to comprehend everything and be unable to accept it. When a few men moved forward to take him away, the dog started acting abnormally. Like he was trying to communicate something, he pounded on the lid and barked loudly. They all stood in confusion.
The dog then abruptly stopped talking. He lay atop the coffin and remained motionless.
The wife of the cop approached. She was positive the dog would hear her, when all of a sudden the widow screamed:
— God, please!
People saw something horrible as they hurried to her screaming.
— His respiration has stopped!.. He went with him!
Torn apart by sadness, the widow collapsed to her knees and let out a loud cry.
The audience froze. Others tried to contain their tears by biting their lips or covering their faces with their hands. It became evident that the dog, unable to handle being parted from his owner, had followed him.
Everyone was rocked by that scene. Nobody anticipated that death wouldn’t be able to separate them. The German shepherd was buried at the officer’s feet alongside him, per the desire of his family and fellow soldiers.
Everyone realized then that loyalty is more powerful than life or death.
