We send our son money for college 🎓💸. subsequently found out he was living in a caravan and wasn’t even enrolled.
As parents, we had always thought our son was going to be a big star. Lucas was everything we had hoped for from the moment of his birth: intelligent, kind, and tenacious. Therefore, we never thought that the truth would completely upend everything when he left for university and we transferred thousands of euros to pay for his tuition.
Our pride and joy was Lucas. Everyone in our peaceful suburban area knew him. He was the valedictorian, captain of the basketball team, courteous, and always smiling. Other parents would point to him and ask, “Why can’t you be more like Lucas?”
He never wavered in his humility in spite of all his accomplishments. He had a great affection for animals in particular. He whispered, “One day, I want to take care of animals,” as he sat up that night to watch over our ailing puppy. I can still remember that. He had just turned eight.
But my husband, Thomas, and I had other ideas for him. We envisioned Lucas taking over Thomas’s prosperous logistics business one day. We therefore gently—or perhaps a little too firmly—guided him in the direction of business school. Lucas didn’t look very happy, but we assumed that he would finally agree.
I made the decision to surprise him two years later while on a business trip close to his university. I said to Thomas, “I’ll take him out for dinner.” I first went to the admissions office to find out his university residence address.
The receptionist seems perplexed.
“I apologize, but Lucas Martin is not enrolled here as a student.”
I felt the earth give way beneath me.
“That isn’t feasible. He is a second-year student of business.
She checked again.
“Nothing in that name.”
I called Lucas after leaving the building in shock.
“Mom!” he said, as happy as ever. “What a shock! Do you want to get coffee?
Everything seemed regular at the café. He seemed at ease, grinning, and discussing his lectures and lecturers as if nothing were wrong. Even too fine.
I slipped my GPS watch into his coat pocket without anyone seeing before I left.
I followed him from afar that night. The signal took me far into the woods, down a gravel road, and away from school. The tracker came to a halt before a dilapidated caravan.
I saw Lucas leave with his rucksack slung over his shoulder. The door was knocked on. which revealed Julien, my brother, whom I hadn’t seen in years.
“Julien?” Stunned, I muttered.
We were no longer in contact. As Thomas and I established our careers, Julien worked at a variety of odd jobs until landing a job as a veterinarian in a tiny town.
I hurried over to them.
“Good luck! What is this? Why don’t you attend college? What are you doing with him here?
Lucas’s expression froze.
“Mom? Please, I can explain.
Julien grinned as he leaned against the doorframe.
“It’s good to see you, Claire.”
“Get out of here,” I yelled.
Lucas held out his hands.
“Mom, just listen to me. Please.
I was trembling. “Begin by providing an explanation. Right now.
I was shaking.
“Get started right now.”
Lucas, obviously overwhelmed, looked down.
“Mom, I never attended college. I couldn’t.
At last, his eyes glistened as he gazed up.
“I was aware that it wasn’t for me. I made numerous attempts to inform you, but I was too afraid to let you and Dad down.
My throat constricted.
“And the cash? Everything we sent you? The phone conversations in which you discussed your “exams” and the phony report cards? What was that all about?
Lucas let out a sigh.
“I used it to learn in a different way and to live.” I trailed behind Julien. He taught me all there is to know about animals, including emergencies and care. I completed online courses to earn my certification. He and I have collaborated virtually daily. Mom, I want to work as a veterinarian. For real.
Angry, I turned to Julien.
“And you allowed him to spend two years lying to his parents?”
Unfazed, Julien shrugged.
You didn’t pay attention to him. Actually, you never did. He informed you about his childhood dream. To suit your intentions, you deleted it. I was the only one who took him seriously, so he came to me.
I was caught between perplexity, remorse, and rage.
“You had the option to visit us. discovered an other solution.
Lucas moved in closer.
“I understand. I was lying. I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to do here, though, for the first time. I truly want to help every day when I get up.
From his pocket, he took out a crumpled picture of himself with a dog in his arms, wearing a lab coat.
“I recover. I get it. And, Mom, I’m content.
I glanced at the picture, then at him. He was now a determined young man rather than a lost youngster.
