This morning, something was hanging out of my air vent: I walked closer to see what it was — and froze in terror

It was a hot day, and the air inside felt stale, so I went into the room as usual to get some fresh air. After approaching the wall and taking a quick look at the vent, I froze.

There was something protruding from the gap.

I was initially unable to identify it. It was dark, long, and strangely twisted. It hardly moved at all. Slowly, without averting my gaze, I took a step closer. I took a closer look. Then I understood that it was

It appeared to be alive, although it hardly moved. What if it was a hand? That was one of the scariest things that crossed my mind. Or some unidentified animal? My palms began to perspire, and my heart began to race. I took a step back, then another. Not even my breath was coming.

I carefully approached it once more while maintaining eye contact. looked once more. It was a snake. An actual one. Like it was observing me, it hung there. The rest of its body was concealed deep within the vent, leaving only the tip exposed.

My entire body was paralyzed by dread, yet I didn’t scream. Because who’s to tell a snake is alone if it entered the house through the ventilation? The others are where? Why is it in this place?

I began phoning emergency services, locked all the doors, and hid in the adjacent room. They warned me not to come close, not to move quickly, and most importantly, not to attempt to take it out on my own.

I frantically looked up the question online while I waited for the experts: how could snakes possibly get inside a city apartment? It was discovered that someone harbored exotic creatures, including snakes, in the basement of an adjacent building.

Rumor had it that one of them had “gone missing.” This is the outcome of it apparently slithering through the ventilation system.

I couldn’t believe it had really happened until the experts eventually showed up and carefully took the snake out. For a long time later, I continued to shake.

I now automatically look up whenever I walk by the air vent. Additionally, I always advise folks to pay attention to odd things. Perhaps something is actually observing you from the wall if it seems like it is.
