Me 🥺 I’m Anna, and I find it difficult to describe what happened to me that evening. After a dreadful trip to the clinic, my husband Alex and I were making our way home on foot. I was informed that I had very little probability of becoming a mother. The world dwindled to the chilly chart on the wall and the white coat of the doctor. Alex sat next me, motionless, and avoiding eye contact.
There was a thick quiet between us on the drive home. He simply held the driving wheel and whispered softly, “Mother will tear us apart,” as I tried not to scream as I saw the lights flash past the window. I knew that he was correct.
For the first time, I felt completely alienated from my own family on his father’s birthday. Under the tablecloth, I sat amid fifty people at the long table, my hands shaking and my smile frozen.
Sofia, his mother, dominated the space like a ball queen. Her icy gaze cut straight through me. She raised her glass during the celebration and said something I will never forget:

Everyone looked at me as though I didn’t exist. A young, expectant woman who would eventually become his child’s mother showed up at the door. Sofia happily presented her to the visitors after giving her a gentle hug:

I remained motionless. Blood was ringing in my ears, and my heart was racing. I wanted to yell, but instead I turned and headed for the door.
I hung on even though my tears burned. The air was crisp and frigid outside. I heard footsteps behind me and took a few steps.
