My youngster asked a janitor a straightforward inquiry that profoundly altered our life.
We were people-watching, as we usually did, while eating a normal lunch in a mall food court with my 6-year-old son Micha. I was eating my coffee, and he was eating his customary chicken nuggets. Micha saw an elderly man with a broom nearby at that moment.
He moved slowly, almost painfully. His name tag said “Frank,” his outfit appeared faded, and his face conveyed the tale of many arduous years, not only of labor but of life in general.
“Why does he look so sad?” Micha murmured softly as she leaned in my direction.
I softly answered, “Perhaps he’s going through a difficult moment.”
Micha gave a faint nod. Then, suddenly, he rose and approached the man with that impromptu goodwill that only youngsters seem to possess.
— “Hey! Would you want to join us for a seat? He inquired.
Frank appeared taken aback.
— He said courteously, “Oh, thank you, little one, but I have to keep working.”
With a smile, Micha said, “You are welcome to eat my cookie. It is the largest.
There was a momentary silence. They caught the attention of curious eyes. Micha then whispered, “Do you miss your dad?”
Time paused. The elderly man froze. Then he bent down and gave Micha a tight hug, overcome with emotion. Nothing to say. Only tears.
The whole food court’s mood changed. Even the employees halted their work. A woman muttered, “My God, this kid,” moved by the situation.
A Basic Inquiry Our lives were completely turned upside down when my son asked a janitor.
Everything began as a typical Saturday. While my six-year-old son Micha and I were seated at the mall food court, he observed a janitor called Frank who was obviously worn out, stooped, and had a blank expression on his face.
“Why does he look so sad?” Micha asked me.
Shortly after, Micha approached Frank, gave him his cookie, and said politely, “Do you miss your dad?”
Frank sobbed and gave Micha a deep hug, speechless from the intensity of his feelings.
Micha returned to the mall the following day with his old dinosaur hoodie and gave it to Frank, stating, “It’s really warm.”
Feeling touched, Frank joined us in sharing his experience of losing his son and grandson in a car crash. Once a time for phone calls and fun, Saturdays had devolved into a time of loneliness and silence.
“You can still be someone’s grandpa—mine,” Micha remarked quietly.
Every Saturday after that, Frank joined us for lunch. We exchanged memories, tales, and sandwiches.
until he failed to appear one day. We learned that he had been let go because the new management thought he was too slow. Devastated, Micha made a video pleading for assistance. It got viral really fast.
We were able to pay Frank’s rent, replace his heating, and assist him in getting back on his feet because of the kindness of people on the internet. After watching the video, Harold, an old acquaintance, offered him a part-time job at his hardware store.
Harold’s granddaughter and grandchildren soon joined us. We’ve been getting together twice a month ever since. One small act of compassion led to the creation of an unexpected family.
And it all began when a toddler posed a straightforward query.
Remember that one tiny act can have a profound impact on someone’s life.
