Our dog crept into the bed at night, put his paws on my wife’s chest while she was asleep, and began barking. When we discovered why the animal was doing that, we were horrified
It was a typical evening. We were snuggled under the covers in our bedroom, my wife and I asleep. Our one-year-old daughter and six-year-old son had been sleeping in their rooms for a while. Nothing suggested danger, and everything was calm.
Our Labrador, Semi, burst into the bedroom around three in the morning. He is an intelligent, loving dog that has been a part of our family for eight years. He always knew how to act in the house and had never caused any trouble. But he was different that night.
Semi put his paws on my wife’s breast, raced to her side of the bed, and started barking softly. I was immediately worried by his actions. He had always respected our stern prohibition against him climbing onto the bed. Now, however, he was behaving eerily and strangely.
My pulse was pounding when I suddenly woke up and noticed the dog towering over my wife in the low light. I was momentarily terrified: what was happening? However, I immediately realized what was going on and dialed emergency services.
I knew this wasn’t about the dog when I heard an odd creak and a barely perceptible movement in the hallway.
As though he was aware of the precise location of the threat, Semi stood between us and the door.
I awoke my spouse, gestured for her to be quiet, and then cautiously made my way to the door. Another sound caught my attention: a gentle shuffling sound coming from the wooden floor.
I picked up my phone right away and dialed the cops. We hid in the restroom with the children as we awaited the patrol’s arrival; Semi remained at the door, keeping watch.
After seven minutes, which seemed like forever at the time, we heard someone outside yell:
Police! Stay put, everyone!
Two intruders were apprehended directly within our house. They believed they could tidy up the house while we were asleep, so they had come in through the living room window. However, they had failed to account for our dog.
Semi turned into a real hero. Who knows what may have happened if it weren’t for him. We got him the warmest blanket and a large bone. He now sleeps close to the door of our bedroom. We no longer quarrel.
He truly is our protector.
