Everyone was startled to learn why the dog acted in such a manner after noticing that it refused food and did not leave the tomb.
Day after day, a dog sat beneath a lone pine tree on the edge of a little cemetery. It simply sat and gazed at a new grave with the inscription, 1958–2025, without barking, whining, or moving. beloved spouse. devoted companion.
Two weeks.
The dog was spotted sitting by the grave every morning, its gaze fixed on the ground. Compassionate locals brought food, but it refused to eat or drink. Occasionally, when someone attempted to remove it, it resisted and came back.
People asked questions, whispered, and were perplexed. Why didn’t it go? What made it turn down food? All it knew, though, was that it was waiting.
The dog would occasionally raise its head and listen. But there was silence everywhere.
Before they realized why the dog behaved that way, many were astounded by its actions.
A woman arrived at the graveyard one day close to twilight. Eyes clouded, exhausted. The widow was the one. The pain was too intense for her to attend the funeral. She felt compelled to come now, though. She was drawn by something.
Then she caught sight of him.
The dog sat like it was made of stone. It didn’t respond. Only after she stated:
— Hector?
Did its ear hardly move?
She went up, knelt, and gazed into its eyes, and she realized everything.
It didn’t move, eat, or drink—not because it was in grief. However, it was waiting. Awaiting an order.
Hector had always been brought up rigorously by the owner, who gave orders first, followed by actions. Only eat with authorization. Only depart when instructed to do so.
The dog was at a loss for what to do at this point.
because its beloved had stopped speaking.
The widow’s heart became constricted. Unexpectedly, tears came. She muttered:
— Hector, my beloved I mean, everything is fine. You’re at liberty.
As her spouse used to do, she extended her hand and spoke in a quivering voice:
Come to me, Hector.
The canine blinked. Like waking up from a fantasies. It stumbled. Then got up. And took a step, very, very slowly. Then another. It came up to the widow. It rested its head on her shoulder.
However, the dog vanished the following day.
In the morning, they discovered it lying directly at the base of the same tomb. It appears to be sleeping with its paws crossed.
