Her grandfather chose to open the coffin lid during the girl’s funeral because he had a suspicion, and what he saw almost made him pass out.
Muffled weeping and the monotonous barking of a dog approaching the casket were the only sounds to break the gloomy quiet that pervaded Liza’s funeral.
With his hands stuffed deep into his old coat pockets, the girl’s grandfather stood still, gazing at the white coffin lid that held his only grandchild. She had died too quickly and unexpectedly.
As though it couldn’t believe it, the dog howled and paced back and forth. Everyone assumed it was grief. However, the elderly guy felt that something was off.
The granddad moved in the direction of the casket. Those in his immediate vicinity started whispering:
His sadness has driven him insane.
The poor old man
He didn’t care, though. His heart thumped so violently that it seemed to be about to explode out of his chest. He heard a sound when his hand made contact with the lid. Very faint, nearly undetectable, like a whimper or a faint sigh
The audience froze. Someone yelled:
Avoid doing it!
Please don’t hurt yourself!
As though in a trance, he was already ripping off the latches, smashing the locks, and tearing at the lid. The lid gave way at last. The granddad almost passed out from what he saw when he peered inside.
Inside, his granddaughter’s cherished cat, Lea, was snuggled up next to her body.
Her eyes were closed and her fur looked unkempt. Dead.
Most likely, the animal had sneaked into the casket to bid farewell. Maybe her heart couldn’t handle it; animals freely express all of the feelings that people so frequently keep hidden, including fear, despair, and sorrow.
When the old guy finally started crying, he fell to his knees. Not only for Liza. Additionally, animals say goodbye with greater sincerity than humans do. They feel more than we’re prepared to acknowledge.
As though protecting the girl on her last voyage, Lea lay next to her.
There was a fearsome, yet innocent, quality about that farewell. Actual.
The town’s residents then spoke about the peculiar funeral for a long time.
