When a dog unexpectedly jumped out onto the road and almost got struck by a truck, the driver was startled to learn why the canine had done so.
It was an ordinary morning. The country road was bathed in a gentle golden light as the sun had just started to peek over the horizon. With a long journey ahead and a cruel clock, a long-haul truck driver was rushing to deliver his load on time.
A dog jumped out of the bushes on the side of the road and almost fell under the truck’s wheels as the engine hummed steadily and the wheels grasped the asphalt. Its black and white fur was shaggy, and it barked frantically, as though it was obstructing the path. The driver responded swiftly, screeching the tires and slamming on the brakes, but it was too late; he had already past the animal and something dark that was laying in the center of the road.
“What the devil?” Heart thumping, the driver mumbled as he climbed out of the cab.
The dog didn’t flee. As though calling the man over, it circled around the truck and stood next to the black bundle, barking and looking directly at him.
As the motorist got closer, he noticed a standard black trash bag. It was slightly scratched by the wheels, but it was still there.
He knelt down and slowly tore open the edge of the bag, whispering, “Is this what it was about?”
His blood ran cold as he saw what was within.
There was a baby within. A little boy. Small, covered with a small blanket, barely breathing and moving, yet alive.
The driver wrapped the infant in his own jacket and dialed an ambulance right away. Sitting quietly next to him, the dog seemed to have accomplished its goal.
Later, it was discovered that the boy had been secretly born by a young woman who chose to discard him like trash on the side of the road, either in a panic or out of desperation.
However, destiny had other ideas. The infant was spared because of the dog, whose instinct outlasted human brutality.
And for a long time afterward, the driver reflected on how the dog had saved his life.
