At the age of 90, David McCallum, who was best known for playing Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard on NCIS, passed away. As the longest-serving cast member and a pivotal figure since the show’s launch in 2003, McCallum spent more than 20 years on the popular program.
McCallum’s appearances on NCIS have decreased in recent years as he has made time for his wife, kids, six grandchildren, and their beloved cat, Nickie, a top priority. McCallum remained dedicated to the program despite his diminished role, agreeing to make an appearance in Season 16 despite stating that he wanted more time with his family.
Acknowledging his character’s development, McCallum respectfully resigned as chief medical examiner in 2018 to make room for his assistant, Brian Dietzen. McCallum was convinced to stay on as the show’s historian even though he had thought about quitting since he believed his role was out of date.
