Bryan Kohberger, a criminology graduate student, will go on trial for killing Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, both 21; and Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle, both 20. On November 13, 2022, the bodies of all four were discovered at their Moscow, Idaho, off-campus residence.

A fresh tragic aspect of the story has surfaced as Kohberger’s trial is about to start. Madison and Kaylee were discussing whether or not to go out and get lunch just before they were murdered. The two had just gotten back from a night out with Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, their other roommates.

Because they were in their bedrooms at the time and the murderer was unaware of their presence, Mortensen and Funke both survived the murder.

Following Judge Steven Hippler’s approval of the prosecutors’ motion to allow the surviving roommates’ texts and 911 calls to be submitted as evidence in the trial, the new information was made public.

The evidence demonstrates how Funke, Mogen, Mortensen, and Goncalves got together that evening to talk about what had happened earlier. They “talked for a while before going to bed” about two in the morning, according to the court ruling.

According to the court order, “The roommates debated going out to a food truck for a late snack, prompting D.M. to send text to an Uber driver she knew at 2:10 a.m. to see if he was driving.” The group argued over whether or not to go out for a late-night snack.

But in the end, the girls chose to simply go to bed.

Kernodle and her partner Chapin were still not together at the time.

It is believed that the murderous rampage occurred between 4 and 4.25 in the morning. Shortly after, the masked murderer left the scene. The perpetrator was masked with “bushy eyebrows,” according to Mortensen, who was the only one to see them.

Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt stated that the four students had been “butchered” and confirmed that stabbing was the cause of death for all four.

It took two months for Kohberger to be charged and taken into custody by law police. He was handcuffed in the Scranton area after driving to his parents’ house in Pennsylvania.

Jury selection will start on July 30 and Kohberger will go on trial for the killings.
