12-year-old dies after fatal allergic reaction to milkshake

After consuming a milkshake from a London café that did not adhere to food safety regulations, a 12-year-old girl died.

According to the parents of the schoolgirl who died after suffering a severe allergic response to a shake created in a filthy blender that included lethal traces of nuts, the incident could have been “prevented so simply” and “only adds to the [heartbreak].”

After 12-year-old Mia St Hilaire died from an allergic reaction to a milkshake at the Pop Inn Café on Southwark Park Road, a tragic event occurred in South-East London, leaving a family devastated, according to the BBC.

After visiting the business in the summer of 2023, Mia, a young schoolgirl with a known tree nut allergy, experienced a severe response to the shake, which was thought to contain remnants of almonds and hazelnuts from a prior milkshake made in the same machine.

After being taken to the hospital, she passed away on August 30, 2023.

Blender without washing

The food safety team at Southwark Council established an inquiry into the incident’s circumstances after Mia’s tragic death. Their investigation revealed a disastrous error: the milkshake Mia had drunk had traces of almonds and hazelnuts.

CCTV footage found during the investigation revealed that Baris Yucel, 47, the café’s operator, neglected to clean the blender before making Mia’s drink. She died tragically as a result of a severe allergic reaction brought on by residue from a previous milkshake that contained tree nuts that lingered in the machine.

The Southwark Council maintained that Mia’s death was a preventable tragedy and that it was directly caused by the absence of fundamental food safety precautions.

Yucel entered a guilty plea to all six of the criminal charges against him on December 2, 2024, at Croydon Magistrates’ Court. These charges included serving food that contained an undisclosed allergen, which proved to be a fatal error, failing to prevent cross-contamination during food preparation, and failing to provide customers with allergen information.

According to Your Local Guardian, Yucel has “had to live with the consequences (of) what happened” and “shown genuine remorse.” “A day does not pass when he does not think about the child and her family,” his attorney continues.

The café owner was given a $23,000 US fine and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service by the court on January 24, 2025.

Food security

In a press release, the St. Hilaire family’s attorneys, Leigh Day Law Firm, state that “no outcome will ever make up for the loss [the family] have suffered.”

“Knowing that establishments providing food and beverages follow the food safety laws set in place to safeguard their lives should give Mia and all other children with allergies peace of mind. However, this doesn’t happen all too frequently, which can have disastrous results like in this instance,” the law firm said.

Although this sentence emphasizes the legal repercussions of disregarding food safety laws, no amount of punishment can make up for Mia’s family’s tragic death.

“We think of Mia every day and knowing her death could have been prevented so simply, only adds to how heartbroken we are as a family,” Adrian and Chanel, Mia’s grieving parents, wrote in a statement posted on the lawyer’s website.

“We hope this conviction and fine sends a loud message to businesses serving food and drinks across the country, of the devastating consequences of failing to take food safety seriously,” the statement goes on-line.

Since Mia’s passing, a council enforcement officer has visited the cafe multiple times to make sure protocols are being followed to avoid a recurrence of the same occurrence.

In order to shed further light on what went wrong and how such occurrences can be avoided in the future, an inquest into Mia’s death is scheduled to take place shortly.

The accountability of food establishments with regard to allergy control is seriously called into question by this case. This tragedy is made the more terrible for Mia’s bereaved family because it could have been prevented with proper training, stringent procedures, and obvious allergen labeling.
