I believed my staff was stealing when pricey items began inexplicably going missing from my store, but after watching the security footage, I was appalled
I knew every shelf, box, and package in that tiny store, which I operated like my own house. Since only they had easy access to the storage room and could stealthily move boxes around, I initially believed it was a coincidence when the most valuable stuff started to disappear, but eventually I grew to believe that one of my staff was to blame.
In order to avoid upsetting the mood amongst those who had worked with me for years, I asked them straight in the staff room while trying to smile. However, all I got were bewildered glances and earnest denials. It was terrible and humiliating since the most valuable items were always the ones that disappeared. For example, the burglar would always select the most expensive cheese out of ten varieties, or the best and most expensive coffee out of ten packs.
I had had enough. I printed screenshots of every surveillance video I had gathered over the previous few weeks and brought them to the police. I reasoned that the professionals should take care of it, track down the thief, restore the items, or at the very least, imprison the person who so blatantly takes something that isn’t theirs.
We all witnessed something in the security room, however, that nobody had anticipated—something much more serious than a typical theft—when the officers went over the records
The same woman in a wheelchair kept showing up in the video amid the regular patrons. She strolled slowly around the aisles, grinning at the employees and getting sympathetic glances from others.
Nobody, not even the cashier, ever considered her wheelchair as a potential hiding location when she asked for assistance reaching things on the high shelf, thanked them profusely, and occasionally joked with them.
She is shown on camera meticulously putting the priciest cheeses and best coffee packs into her wheelchair basket, then deftly concealing them in a bag or beneath a blanket while diverting the shop assistant’s attention by seeking a price check or a meeting with the manager.
Since there was a sick woman sitting in front of them who needed assistance and compassion, it would have seemed impolite for anyone walking by to take a closer look.
The worst part was that she wasn’t disabled at all; it was evident from her actions and from the video that she was leaving the store without the wheelchair in a composed manner that the whole thing was a carefully orchestrated lie.
Knowing that accusing someone of fabricating a disability in order to steal could spark a public uproar, the police pledged to approach cautiously. They started gathering evidence, recording recurring incidents, and looking for witnesses.
